Best Kopi and Toast in Chinatown

Updated: Aug 25, 2023

In the hippest part of town, where kopi and toast reign supreme, Chinatown beckons the brave and the buzzed. We're talking about a coffee crawl epic so real, even the caffeine gods are impressed (hopefully).

Coffee Break

Address: 7 Maxwell Rd, #02-78, Singapore 069111

Opens: Mon - Fri 7:30am - 2:30pm | Closed Saturdays & Sundays

Coffee Break located at Amoy Street Food Centre, #02-78 and offers both traditional coffee and bold new flavors, such as Sea Salt Caramel or Black Sesame Latte. @x3rai, the brave soul decides to tackle the legendary queue at Coffee Break. It's like waiting for the day the One Piece is found, but is it worth it? Rais emerged victorious, declaring, "Had a classic coffee from Coffee Break to see what the hype was all about. The queue for this one coffee is also long tho. Conclusion: it’s actually worth the queue haha.

@x3rai shares with a user about the best part, It’s 1.60! Surprisingly quite cheap for how it looks and tastes!" The coffee gods had smiled upon Rais that day. Good for you @x3rai!

But things did not look so good over with @nasha at Chinatown Complex…

The 1950s Coffee “五十年代”

335 Smith St, #02-48, Singapore 050335

Opens: Tue - Sun 7:00am to 5:00pm | Closed on Mondays

Armed with her smartphone and a deep craving for toast this one day, @nasha spills the beans on the well-known 1950s Coffee at Chinatown Complex Food Centre. Opened since the 1950s, it is a Michelin-listed kopi stall that serves up good traditional coffee, tea, toasts and eggs. But what’s this? Nasha braved the long Q at Chinatown Complex, where a sign promised toast and egg, only to find none! "I kopi from here, the Q very long ah, Chinatown complex, sign board say got toast and egg but no toast and egg :( I Q for kopi ahahhaha, my crippling anxiety cannot handle being scolded my uncle there, there is no egg and toast." Poor Nasha. Just like life, the struggle for good toast is real. Better luck next time.

Wouldn’t hurt to try the Maxwell Food Centre’s 1950s Coffee outlet, or just go at breakfast timing… an advice many of us would do good to heed.

Lim’s Cafe

Chinatown Complex 335 Smith St, #02-31, Singapore 050335

Opens: Mon 9:00am - 7:00pm | Tues & Sat 9:00am - 6:30pm | Thurs & Fri: 8:30 am - 8:30 pm

Meanwhile, just a stone’s throw away, at Lim’s Cafe, @jerryneo found a unique offering of coffee, "Lim’s cafe is pretty cool too. Uncle use the espresso machine to make traditional Nanyang coffee."

This unique blend of traditional and modern proves that the good things will never disappear even as time passes. While Lim’s Cafe sells other drinks, one simply could not resist ordering the signature coffee. Freshly brewed coffee beans at an affordable price - basically a god sent gift - what more can we ask for? Obviously not the uncaffeineted!

Nanyang Old Coffee

268 South Bridge Rd, Singapore 058817

Opens: Mon - Sun 7:00am - 6:30pm

Now, get ready for a cosmic twist as @monklun2003 unveils the coffeehouse-museum time machine combo in the heart of Chinatown- Nanyang Coffee House.

Located just right next to the iconic Yip Yew Chong’s Detective Conan Mural, it garners just as much love. @monklun2003 couldn't help but gush about its vintage vibes, the perfect spot for a kopi fix after a wild Chinatown adventure. But, oh no, the museum was MIA on their Friday escapade - major bummer! 😩 @janissa agrees! "Brings us back to the 1960s and 70s! Good coffee and tea with toast bread :-)"

Gather your kopi kakis and conquer the kopi & toast adventures Chinatown has to offer. Don't forget to share your best and worst finds as you venture out into the java jungle!
