Howdy everyone,
The weather has been thundery showers non-stop for the past few days, but that's not stopping Scratchbac's growth team! We've been spending a lot of time in Jurong West, doing walkarounds to learn more about what it's like to be part of the hyperlocal community.
At Scratchbac, our vision is to help people connect with their locality and develop a sense of hyperlocal belonging. We want to shine a spotlight on amazing everyday people and their stories, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem.
Here are two happenings I encountered just this week.

"Surprise Tompang Encounter”
I witnessed something really cool at the Pioneer Road North road junction on Wednesday. A Chinese dude on a motorbike stopped for the red light and waved at a Malay dude who was crossing the road. The Chinese dude waved and both of them gave each other a "sup bro" nod. Next thing I know, the Chinese dude gestured for the Malay dude to hop on, and they left together. I guess they're friends, and that's what it means to be part of a hyperlocal community.
Having access to resources of others extended to you simply because of affiliation.

"Cardboard Box Ah Ma”
I came across this elderly woman who was collecting cardboard boxes in the heartlands. I offered to help her gather some that I saw at the blue recycle bins, but she rejected my offer. She told me that we shouldn't do that because it is wrong to empty the trash onto the ground. I couldn't believe how considerate she was. It made me feel ashamed of myself, but at the same time, I was proud of her. Check out this post on scratchbac here (Only works on mobile)
These are great stories that showcase the spirit of community and belonging. It's wonderful to see people from different backgrounds coming together and helping each other, and it's also great to see the elder woman being so considerate about the environment. These stories highlight the importance of being mindful and taking the time to get to know the people around us.
Moral of the story. There are amazing people around you! Slow down and see and get to know them!
